What Causes High Indoor Humidity Levels?

High moisture levels are generated both indoors and outdoors.  When moisture levels are generated outdoors, they will eventually make their way indoors.

External Sources of Moisture.

Excess moisture may enter a home externally several different ways. A leaking roof will cause water to drip from above or water may enter a house through a basement or crawlspaces. Moisture can enter a crawlspace / basement due to a high water table, defective gutters, or through dampness in the soil.

Moisture may cause biological growth to proliferate indoors, often in well-hidden spaces.  This "hidden" growth will allow mold spores to be released into living spaces by way of natural air currents.

Moisture problems that persist over extended periods of time will eventually decay and lead to the rotting building materials, which will then threaten the overall integrity of a home and the occupants overall health.

"The way to control indoor mold growth is to control moisture.”
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

Internal Sources of Moisture.

Moisture can be generated indoors from people and their daily activities such as breathing and perspiration. Even an individual at rest will release close to a quart of water per day.

Indoor sources include:

  • Washing/Drying clothes

  • Indoor Clotheslines

  • House plants

  • Humidifiers

  • Washing dishes

  • Showers

  • Improperly vented appliances

  • Newer homes (due to high moisture in new lumber, concrete or drywall)

Preventative procedures such as regularly monitoring the RH levels and the use of a dehumidifier, especially in "hidden" areas, will help catch moisture problems before mold growth becomes extensive and damages the home, or even grows at all.
